The Application Process

Better's application process is entirely online and takes only about 3 minutes for house hunters who are just looking for basic pre-approval, although the website indicates that it takes up to 2 hours if you are shopping for a home and 30 minutes if you've found a specific property to buy. The application for refinancing takes just 3 minutes.

Once you’ve answered basic questions about your financial situation, home equity, or prospective property, you’ll be sent an initial loan estimate and connected with a dedicated loan officer for more in-depth support along the way. Once you’ve carried out a list of tasks which you’ll receive with your loan estimate, you’ll be able to request to lock in a rate. Better usually closes on a mortgage loan within 3-6 weeks after rate lock, often 10 days faster than the industry average.

Rates and Terms

Better’s repayment terms are 15, 20, or 30 years, with 5/1, 7/1, and 10/1 options for adjustable rate loans. Since all of Better’s loans have no prepayment penalties, you can pay the loan back sooner than the end of the repayment term if you wish.

Average closing costs are $3,598 in third-party fees for a purchase loan, or $1,824 in third-party fees for a refinance loan.

    I was very skeptical of an online…

    I was very skeptical of an online mortgage broker while shopping for mortgages. Every other lender, both national and local, told me they could not provide a more competitive rate or lower closing costs than Better was offering. My local banker even said “I’m taking my banking hat off and talking to you person to person, there is no way we can compete with Better’s product, I’m even going to look in to them for my personal home refinance”. The entire mortgage process through Better was the fastest, most efficient loan process I’ve ever experienced. The ability to upload documents and e-sign made everything easy. There was almost always some one available to help immediately when any issues arose, and the couple of times some one wasn’t immediately available, they always responded within the hour. I would highly recommend Better to any one looking for a smooth, expedited, competitive mortgage product.

    At first, I was a little worried because it seemed like I never got to talk to the same person twice. But every person I was connected with was familiar with my file, and could intelligently address my questions. I started to feel grateful that I had so many competent (and pleasant) people working on my re-fi - there was no need to wait for ONE person to become available to address the many inquiries I had throughout the process.     Smoothest mortgage experience!

    We just closed on our new house today and this was the smoothest experience. There was one minor hiccup at closing that was resolved right away. I've purchased homes before and and dealt with error after error throughout the process with other lenders. I kept waiting for something to go wrong but nope! Smooth as butter. 🙂 Oh and the best part about them, when you call them, they answer immediately and the first person you speak with gets you an answer right away or finds it for you. I think the longest time I spent waiting on the phone was maybe 3 minutes but they checked back every minute. Wow! That is a 180 from the normal "you're call is important to us but you'll be on hold for the next 3 hours" these days. We are so happy with this experience!

    No better than better

    I had an easy time working with the people at Better. Their responses were fast via email, and if I needed to, scheduling a call, or just impromptu calling and getting someone was also easy. I had tried to refinance with my previous lender who was busy, and as a contractor, lenders can sometimes make getting the loan more complicated than it needs to be.     Super easy mortgage process!!! I loved the communication about the status of our loan. We were able to speak with a processor before committing any money to the process to gain a clear understanding of what options were available. The process moved as quick as I could upload documents.     Start to finish the Better Mortgage team operated a single cohesive unit, making a usually unpleasant process, as pleasant as could be.     Perfect for someone like me

    Perfect for someone like me, who wanted to do everything online. It was easy to answer questions and upload documents. The early person I spoke with helped me figure out the perfect loan that balanced my priorities. He got what I was looking for right away. Once I got into uploading documents, it barely took any time to do my refinancing. Under a month.     The team at better was very helpful and responsive. The online task tracker was easy to understand, use efficiently and follow progress. The mobile notary was easy to schedule and accommodating. The only drawback was understanding the details for credits on my loan estimate. I feel like the $500 referral discount was buried in the total and never felt entirely confident of the amount in the credits.

    Better Mortgage was a real pleasure to work with throughout the entire process. They certainly made the process appear easy!     2 Stars for rates and speed - The rest was a mess

    I used to work in the mortgage industry so I have a pretty good idea of how this process works. They get 2 stars for having the lowest rates and for fast processing and underwriting times. The rest of the experience was a bit of a mess and clunky. So you start with putting in what type of loan you're trying to qualify for then it asks you for the normal documents. I was doing a refinance and rolling in the closing costs so I wouldn't need any cash to close. It didn't correctly add in the amounts at the start of the loan and then also asked me for bank statements to show sufficient funds to close. Once again, rolling in costs so don't need to provide that. Had to reach out to processor to adjust both issues. Went through processing and UW very quickly as I had sent them everything they needed quickly. Moved onto closing, what a mess. First closing disclosure (CD) was correct so we set up signing. Then as signing approached CD was changed and all of a sudden I needed to bring around $1,000 cash to close. Emailed and messaged closer to correct. No correspondence until after my signing. I was left messaging my notary during the day saying we might not actually be signing because the docs were wrong. So had to cancel 1st signing. For the next week we played try to correct the CD. I found out, yes in fact they made a mistake on the CD. What followed was around 8 different CDs. Good luck trying to keep up with all of those and the changes and which one is most recent, because their system is poorly set up to track that. It took a week to finally get it corrected and set up new signing. When the notary came, there were 2 different CDs again including an incorrect one. Finally got everything taken care of and the loan funded. They transferred it to The Money Source (TMS) to service. Had an awful customer experience with them, where their VP of Customer Experience had to get involved and told me that their customer care team had sent me the wrong information. Now my loan servicing is being transferred on the day my 1st payment is due on a holiday weekend, so we'll see how that goes. Hopefully as it moves further away from Better.com my experience will get better.

    A to A-plus for Better

    Five stars (rounding from about 93%). First, here's what I found smooth and solid: everything from entry to the transition from loan preparation to closing. Your website is very user-friendly in design, layout, navigation, content, feedback to user, and access to support. I really loved the educational materials. Also, the processes I encountered on my account page on the website were tightly linked to personnel who were highly accessible, and provided timely, thorough, and clear explanations and guidance. That made my experience of the loan application, analysis, approval, and preparation processes really seamless and low-stress. I'm a newbie at finance! However, I felt like we hit a wall when we got to the loan closure process, insofar as I felt like I was working blind and alone. I didn't know what to expect. So there was a lapse in support there, that I initially attributed as a personnel issue. However it may also (or entirely) have been structural; the information guiding me through the loan process during the closing steps were nowhere near as granular as they had been during other steps (e.g., official emails from BMC tying to notices on my account page; or even the time-line on my account page). Now that we're in the funding phase, I feel like I'm back in business with the BMC whose praises I've been singing to friends and family again. I'm getting an email from someone every day or so, explaining what's happening, and what to expect in the path ahead. What a relief! I hope these remarks have been clear. I don't actually know the names of the various phases of the loan process, so I've tried to guess which terms would make these smooth (mostly) and bumpy (closing) waypoints clear.     Better is exactly that: Better.

    I shopped around for best interest rates, and Better delivered. What I did not shop for was a great digital experience—and Better delivered that surprisingly well. I've closed a couple of mortgages the traditional way and this took the inherent complexity and made it 10x more clean and simple. My Better dashboard made every step and status clear. There were email and txt check-ins and reminders by attentive team members all along the way. I opted for a paper signing at closing and their seamless referral was an experienced pro. This was one of those "Oh, wow- this is how tech SHOULD work" experiences. If only air-travel and health care UX were this well designed.

    Overall I am thrilled with the rate and the entire process. Each were much better than I've ever experienced. The interface was very understandable and the tasks were very clear. The Hybrid closing was ideal. Prior to closing I compared my final closing documents to my very initial estimate from them there were very few differences and those minor differences were actually in my favor! This is a top notch company to trust and do business with and THIS is an unsolicited review from a regular home owner refinancing.

    Super fast refinance processing

    Super fast refinance processing. I was able to see my next task immediately, and I can upload my documents to their secured website which is 24hours available. I am working 12hours shifts, so it worked really well. Also, it explains what kinds documents are needed and how can I get these from my end, such as assets, ID documents. All of terminology could be confuse me on refinance, but this tasks process helped me a lot. Only thing I can think of any possible improvement on their process, I was getting multiple loan estimates with changes. I wish it could have a simple comment “what made this amount change” instead of “the applicant’s information is different from original loan application” I was not able to figure out what causes made loan estimate more than 5-6times. So, I was little frustrated.

    I had not worked with Better before, but I have taken out 12 mortgages in my lifetime. I have to say that this was, by far, the easiest and fastest I have ever gotten funding.     Bottom line: lower closing costs and very competent/professional team. What else do you need???

    My initial reason for considering Better for our refi was the quoted rate and lower closing fees. Once I began initial communications, it was clear that the Better team was very professional and more than willing to help. I appreciated the clear communication of who was on “my team” and the roles they played during the process. The online portal was very easy to use and feedback was concise and timely. My main complaint with other mortgage companies is the “automated” nature of loan estimates and quotes did not always match the communication with the company reps, which came across as disjointed and frustrating... This process was much better: verbal or written communication first, then online portal changes following that. THANK YOU!

    BEST Refi Experience Ever!!!

    My expectations of people are pretty high, and it’s RARE that I’m pleased with interactions with businesses. Better has completely blown me away! I signed an initial disclosure with my current lender to refinance in January, and by May, they still weren’t ready to close, so I walked. I locked with Better on May 13, and they closed my refi on May 24 - 11 DAYS. Even my insurance company and the notary remarked how quickly and efficiently everything was done. The online portal is amazing and lets you know exactly what you need to do, and it also tells you what the lender is working on. There are constant updates. I’ve gone through this process several times, so I didn’t need any assistance, but the people on my team called regularly to see if I needed anything. Oh, AND there were no lender fees!!! I’m actually not sure how Better makes any money :) I’ve dealt with a lot of lenders, and I’ve never seen any process so seamless and that moves along so smoothly. Whatever you guys are doing, you’re are doing it right! Thank you, Better! I will always recommend you!

    Smooth refinancing process

    It was a very smooth process and except for the actual closing where the notary came to our house and the appraisal, the refinancing was fully online. As long as you have soft copies of all your documents, it is a great experience. They do ask for a lot of documents, which any responsible mortgage company should. Took around 27 days from start to finish.

    Better is right! Best Rate. Best Ever Experience.

    This was, by far, the easiest refinance I have ever done. Everything was online and straightforward. Staff was available and responsive. And the rate was .75% below anybody (even our long-time mortgage broker) could touch. Can’t rave enough about the experience!

    Disappointed.

    My approval of Better Mortgage has been going down as stages progress. When I had to get a initial quote and submit for approval, there were constant reminders and follow up. Next step Final review and closure, the service dropped. Next I am trying to setup my first payment, is turning to be a nightmare. Everything we need to call customer service and its a forever hold and even call back is only next day after 8:00a.m.!!!! Emails to customer service are not helpful as just automatic responses to call customer care are received.

    Best refinancing experience I have had so far. Great online process and support from the better team whenever needed. Well thought out online workflow. It went so smoothly that I was wondering if it is all going to happen that way (based on my past refinancing experiences). You still have to do your work, but it is very understandable where you are at and what else is needed. Better will most likely sell the mortgage to another lender after some time, but the terms do not change, so it’s ok.

    The best experience ever! Really!

    I never really thought that getting a mortgage could be fun. Well, maybe fun isn’t the right word, but it certainly was fast, easy and smooth sailing every step of the way. For a completely online experience, the customer service, communication and follow through were outstanding. I felt in the know every step of the way and knew what my role and next tasks were as well as what the loan representatives were doing and when.     Painless & modern take on refinancing. At no point does this feel like an old company shoehorning modern methods to a dated approach. Throughout the experience, this felt like a company specifically built in and for the digital era. From first contact to closing to beyond, they have kept me abreast every step of the way. The interface they use is extremely intuitive and efficient in providing the necessary documents, asking questions to the right person during each individual step, or just engaging a human contact whenever you need support.     Worst experience ever

    Worst experience ever. Took almost an extra month, costing me several hundred dollars in interest. The processor, Alyssa, wasn't helpful and vaguely answered my questions, costing me time and money. She also requested the same documents repeatedly. Daniel, the closer, was the only good thing about my experience. He was very prompt, helpful and apologetic when problems arose. Now that my loan has closed and sold, I have been informed that my insurance coverage, which was suggested by better.com, is inadequate. I do not have the time for this inconvenience. I have been frustrated throughout the process and now even more so. I would warn against, rather than recommending your company to anyone. I have bought and refinanced several homes and never had a bad experience like this.

    I had a terrible experience I spoke to the first person they said they can close a loan in 20 days 65 days later after 2 extention of contract still no close. I spent to many hours by the computer printing and uploading documents and running to staples to scan it into the computer. About 100+ tasks were issued and about 100 emails created. not good

    Denied for refi 1 year after buying house with the same financials

    Went to them for a refi because the rates were good and the streamlined online process compared to a local lender or my current mortgage holder. They denied me as I'm listed on as co-owner for some of my mother's properties which I neither pay expenses or receive money from. They said they couldn't do anything because underwriting would count those against my debt to income ratio, even though I bought my house 1 year ago with the same financials. The people are generally friendly and fine to work with compared to my previous mortgage broker, but ultimately they seem to lack the power within their organization to negotiate and close a deal. I don't really blame the people for that, I'm just writing this to say even with solid paperwork you can get denied by their underwriting and the brokers will not be able to help you.

    Horrible service! After the introduction call, nobody answers emails or phone calls. Us and our agent called them multiple times over numerous days. Our loan consultant was Pete O'Rourke and we didn't even speak once the entire time we tried to use this service. Will not use again.

    I’d look elsewhere. Something is off here.

    Was excited to use Better but this was bad! We jumped through big hoops with documentation (I understand things need to be documented of course- that’s not what I’m saying- but what they asked for was unorganized.) and they hired a lazy appraiser who tried to tell us our house lost value, used unrelated comps and refused to use comps right on our street! Appraiser was condescending. Very strange as this was a pretty simple no-cash out refi. I’m happy to refi with my current mortgage company but upset that Better wasted so much of our time!

    We were refinancing our new home construction loan into our final conventional home loan--the process was smooth and prompt from the very beginning and all the way to the end. The only issue (reason for 4/5 stars) is that our closing date and time were not communicated as clearly as they could have been (with us and the notary). Otherwise, everything else was amazing!

    Good interface, good communication

    I liked the self-serve interface. I liked that people were mostly very responsive. Had a few times where I didn’t get a callback and had to follow up my own request, but it was mostly good communication. My biggest criticism would be the thoroughness of work. There were a few times where I was the one to find the mistake in their work. One such example was the wrong interest rate in the estimated final disclosure (or maybe it was the final loan estimate). That should never happen let alone rely on the customer to notice it.

    A Better Way

    The Better refinance was so smooth. I liked how I could look at all the different loan estimates prior to committing to refinancing. This helped me see the different rates and how they affect closing costs. I was able to pick the loan that would work out best for me rather than relying on a person to run the numbers for me. The explanations videos about credits and points were extremely helpful and easy to follow. After committing to refinancing, I couldn’t have asked for an easier process. The tasks to complete were easy to follow and I could upload documents on my own time. This was very helpful because my job limits me from being able to answer phone calls. The online component was perfect. The Better team was very responsive and helpful with any concerns I had. All in all, the refinance wrapped up in less than 4 weeks. I would recommend Better to my closest friends.

    I found your online process convenient…

    I found your online process convenient and efficient. I was very impressed. The only bump in the road was on choice of closing attorney. In SC an attorney must close the loan. I chose an attorney on the appropriate task/form, but he was never contacted. As we moved closer and closer to the closing, I asked that he be notified and involved. Three days before closing, when it was apparent that Better had moved the process along without him, he graciously bowed out of the transaction. The attorney that Better sent to close the loan was very, very good. However, he wasn't my choice. Please review how this was handled and be open to this part of the process in the future.

    Truly a Better Way

    The task management system, where you submit docs and simple explanations directly on the Better website, made the loan approval process a hands-down game changer for me. A far better experience than the traditional banking process: write explanation, print, sign, authorize, blah blah blah. The team was also available when I needed them, but ultimately loved the self-serve environment.

    I've worked in the mortgage industry for 20 years. I have worked for several companies including major ones like the biggest banks in America. It says something that I would go with better than my own company where I had a deep discount. Better mortgage offered me the best mortgage origination I have ever had. Their online interface is simple and better than everybody else (Rocket) out there. I was able to get clear to close and close my loan in 21 days from Offer acceptance. Communication was good I never had trouble reaching them, I can't recommend them enough. It didn't hurt that their rates were best in industry as well.
